DoD 365 (Navy FlankSpeed, Army 365, etc.) FAQ

Assistance and FAQ answers for issues dealing with the DoD computing environment.

1. DoD 365 (Navy FlankSpeed, Army 365, etc.) and CRL Network FAQ

1.1. CRL FlankSpeed User Information

Flank Speed (DoD Microsoft 365) — Quick Help for CRL Users

What is Flank Speed?
Flank Speed is the DoD/Navy Microsoft 365 environment used for email, Teams meetings, and collaboration. If you work with Navy/DoD partners, you may need to join their Teams meetings using your DoD account (separate from your CRL Teams sign-in).

Join a DoD Teams meeting (recommended)

  1. Open Microsoft Edge and start an InPrivate window (or use another browser’s private mode).

  2. When prompted, sign in with your DoD account.

  3. Open the meeting link and select “Continue on this browser” to join in Teams on the web.

Why use InPrivate / Private browsing?
Private browsing keeps your DoD sign-in separate from your CRL sign-in and helps prevent account conflicts (for example, being signed into the wrong tenant).

Access DoD M365 apps (web)
If you have DoD access and a CAC/PIV, you may be able to reach DoD Microsoft 365 services here:
https://portal.apps.mil/

Need help?
Start with CRL Helpdesk if:

  • The site will not load from your CRL PC

  • You have VPN/proxy/connectivity issues

  • You have browser problems or general workstation troubleshooting needs

Contact DoD/Navy support if:

  • Your DoD account will not sign in

  • CAC/PIV authentication fails

  • You cannot access Flank Speed services

  • The DoD meeting itself will not allow you to join (after signing in)

1.2. Nautilus Virtual Desktop for FlankSpeed (NVD) FAQ

Nautilus Virtual Desktop (NVD) FAQ

What is Nautilus Virtual Desktop (NVD)?
Nautilus Virtual Desktop (NVD) is a Department of the Navy virtual desktop service (built on Microsoft Azure Virtual Desktop). It provides an NMCI-like Windows desktop experience and is intended for approved non-GFE (“BYOCD”) users who need access to DoD resources and productivity tools (Outlook, Teams, and other DoD applications).

How do I get an NVD account?
NVD onboarding is managed by the Navy/DoD. The request process can vary by organization:

  • Some teams use a self-service request form.

  • Other teams require a government lead/CTR to submit users for approval.

Follow your government lead’s direction for the correct request path. Provisioning time varies based on demand; plan for a few business days.

If you have a Flank Speed account, you can try the request form here:
https://forms.osi.apps.mil/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx?id=AD4z43fIh0u2rUXpQt4XUMd3cjaCebFOu2-vHnc-NP9UM1JIREFLNEdMWVZRQU9BMjFGRk8wS1JFVi4u

Can I send and receive encrypted emails using NVD on my CRL PC?
Yes. NVD provides a DoD-hosted Outlook experience and supports encrypted email functions (encryption/decryption and digital signature). If encrypted email does not work from your local workstation, NVD may be required for that DoD workflow.

Note on files and copy/paste:
Some NVD sessions may restrict clipboard or file transfer features based on DoD policy. If you cannot copy/paste or move files easily, use OneDrive inside NVD as the supported method to move documents.

How do I access NVD from my CRL PC?
You typically connect using Remote Desktop / Windows App by subscribing to your workspace. This is not the same as “installing NVD.”
If installation or setup requires elevated permissions, submit a CRL Helpdesk request for assistance.

Troubleshooting sign-in errors (“Something went wrong…” / CAA20002)
If you see a sign-in error or code CAA20002, try the steps below.

  1. Reset the Remote Desktop client configuration

  • Open the Remote Desktop client

  • Select the three dots (…)

  • Choose About (if shown)

  • Select Reset user data
This clears the client configuration and removes subscribed workspaces.

  1. Re-add the workspace using the Azure Government URL

  1. If issues continue
Repeat steps 1–2, and if your client offers it, try subscribing without using the URL.

Need help?
Start with CRL Helpdesk if:

  • The NVD portal/site will not load from your CRL PC

  • You have VPN/proxy/connectivity issues

  • You need help installing or setting up Remote Desktop / Windows App

Contact Navy/DoD support if:

  • Your Flank Speed/NVD account cannot sign in

  • CAC/PIV authentication fails on the DoD side

  • NVD access is denied or the service is unavailable

  • The issue only occurs inside the NVD desktop (DoD-hosted apps/services)

See the attached document for additional detail.

TROUBLESHOOTING NVD ERRORS:

If you encounter something like the attached image or if you have trouble signing in and receive an error stating “Something went wrong, we couldn’t sign you in,” which may produce a generic error code of ‘CAA20002,’ here is a solution:

Solution:

  • Click on the 3 dots at the top right corner > About

  • Reset user data

  • Navigate back to the three dots, select 'Subscribe with URL', enter 'https://rdweb.wvd.azure.us/api/arm/feeddiscovery', and then click 'Next'.
  • Try logging back in. If you encounter problems with encrypted emails or website access, repeat the process, but this time choose to Subscribe without using the URL.

1.3. DoD Email Encryption / Digital Signatures FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions Regarding DoD Email and Encryption/Digital Signatures on a CRL Asset

NOTE: Third-party encryption certificates should not be considered the first option for DoD communications and will only be issued by the CRL IT Team in special circumstances on a case-by-case basis. Please refer to this FAQ and consult your government contact for guidance on resolving any data compliance issues.

Q: How do I read encrypted e-mails from a DoD source (e.g., FlankSpeed, Army365) on my CRL-issued PC?

A: Email encryption with DoD systems can be complex. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Outlook Web Access (OWA): If the encrypted email is sent from a DoD Outlook Web Access (OWA), it can be read within the corresponding DoD OWA environment.
  • Outlook Client: If the encrypted email is sent from the Outlook client on a DoD-issued machine, it must be read using the Outlook client on another DoD-issued machine.

Important: When encryption and digital signatures are required, you should use your authorized DoD accounts (e.g., FlankSpeed) rather than your CRL corporate account to avoid compatibility issues.

Example: If an NMCI user sends an encrypted email via the Outlook client and the recipient attempts to open it on a CRL-issued PC using OWA, they may encounter issues. This is a known problem, and as of August 29, 2024, no solution has been provided.

Q: Are there any workarounds?

A: Navy/FlankSpeed Users: Navy contractors can use the Nautilus Virtual Desktop (NVD) to access the NMCI network, which allows them to handle encrypted emails and other tasks that require NMCI network access. For more information, refer to the NVD FAQ here: Nautilus Virtual Desktop for FlankSpeed (NVD) FAQ (helpspot.com).

This setup ensures compliance and functionality when dealing with encrypted communications.

1.4. Microsoft Teams FAQ

Frequently asked questions regarding CRL Teams and DoD Teams

Q: Can I use CRL-GCC High Teams to attend a DoD Teams meeting (Flank Speed, Army 365, etc.)?

A: You should plan to join DoD meetings in a separate browser session. CRL does not have cross-cloud meeting connections enabled, so your CRL Teams desktop app cannot reliably join DoD meetings while you are signed into your CRL account.

Best method:

  1. Open Microsoft Edge and start an InPrivate window.

  2. Sign in with your DoD account.

  3. Open the meeting invite link and choose “Continue on this browser” (Teams on the web).

Tip: Using InPrivate keeps your DoD login separate from your CRL login so you don’t get signed out of either account.
